Val's Take: I don't think the lesson is "too late for the learnin.' " We may not learn the lesson, but somebody else is almost assuredly facing a similar problem --- and it's not too late for them.
We're all doing the best we can -- It's imperfect --- we do need to learn lessons --- BUT even if we don't somebody else likely will learn from our mistakes and the accumulated mistakes of others.--- IN FACT, THAT IS HOW WE LEARN.

Val's Take: It's hard for people with neuro-developmental differences and/or psychiatric disorders to comment on the gross incompetence in the Mental Health Profession and be taken seriously. (This isn't about INDIVIDUALS --- this is about systems that are not keeping professionals on the top of the research).
We're now 9 years out from the National Institute of Mental Health saying we don't have a valid psychiatric diagnostic manual.
Further, the research is linking neuro-developmental differences such as ADHD and Autism with psychiatric disorders that I would say are predictable given the BURNOUT that people with neuro-developmental differences and systemic developmental inflammation are suffering in this society.
Medication often has a role.
But the current crying need is for OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS who have TOOLS and WORK-AROUNDS for Executive Functioning Differences. Individuals also need opportunities to build on the STRENGTHS they do have.

Val's Take: This Talk is about "AUTHENTICITY." Not everyone is TRANSGENDER --- BUT pretty much everyone is dealing with issues of "AUTHENTICITY" in this Society.
Something like different sexual preference or gender identification "LOOKS EXTREME" and that's why we're dealing with it now.
But there are OTHER ISSUES that sound quite "BORING" but actually have A LOT OF IMPLICATIONS such as DIFFERENCES in SHORT TERM MEMORY, ORGANIZATION and SENSORY PROCESSING --- often coming with GIFTS and CHALLENGES.
Maybe as we make space for others to be "AUTHENTIC" -- they'll make space for us.
