Koen Westen, a Lecturer @ Avans University of Applied Science in the Netherlands, writes us about:
Flexible Assertive Community treatment & the Need for Recognition in the US
E-mail from Koen Westen [May 20, 2018]
"Thank you for writing about flexible ACT in a clear article on your website. We really believe ACT and FACT [Flexible Assertive Community Treatment] are both needed to give good quality of care for people with SMI [Serious Mental Illness] in a certain catchment area.
"At the moment we're implementing a new FACT model fidelity scale in The Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden to improve transmural care and networking with other parties in the community.
"FACT has been implemented in Canada, Norway, Belgium, Czech Republic, Moldavia, Poland and some other countries around the world and has been mentioned as a European Best Practise recently.
"For some reason, . . . the US doesn't want another model next to ACT to deliver good care to all people for SMI. I'm glad you made it clear it makes sense and I've added some research to back your remarks.
"I'm a lecturer at Avans University of Applied Sciences and the Vice-President of CCAF [International Certification Centre for Assertive Community Treatment & Flexible ACT]. If you are in need of anything, please let me know.
"With regards,
Koen Westen

Flexible ACT Can Improve Our Continuum of Care and Ultimately the Recovery of Individual People
Research has shown not surprisingly that our Recovery is really based on having just the right amount of personalized and individualized support but not too much and not too little. If people have too much or too little support they are not going to recover optimally.
Flexible ACT can definitely help provide the right amount of support in certain cases.
"The introduction of Flexible ACT has been shown to benefit patients with severe mental illness and indicate the ability of to allocate human resources in mental health care more efficiently."
