Former Director of the National Institute of Mental Health denounced the DSM 5 as "lacking validity," re-oriented NIMH's research away from it, and instituted the Research Domain Criteria Program [RDoC].
The DSM 5: A Scientific & Legal Debacle
How do we know the DSM 5 is not scientifically valid? |
World Psychiatry (2018)
"[T]he DSM approach is clinical but unscientific; the NIMH [Nat'l Institute of Mental Health] approach is scientific but not clinical. The profession still awaits a scientific approach to clinical research on diagnosis." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6127747/ |

The Simple Truth of the DSM
“The simple truth is that descriptive psychiatric diagnosis does not need and cannot support a paradigm shift.
There can be no dramatic improvements in psychiatric diagnosis until we make a fundamental leap in our understanding of what causes mental disorders.
The incredible recent advances in neuroscience, molecular biology, and brain imaging that have taught us so much about normal brain functioning are still not relevant to the clinical practicalities of everyday psychiatric diagnosis.
The clearest evidence supporting this disappointing fact is that not even one biological test is ready for inclusion in the criteria sets for DSM‐5.”
[Orchid Note: The "FUNDAMENTAL LEAP" Dr. Frances says is needed is what the National Institute of Mental Health is trying to do with the Research Domain Criteria Program.
BUT clinical and forensic professionals need A LOT MORE SUPPORT from the Research Community, the Legal Community & Policymakers to reach anything like an ethical exercise of knowledge & lack thereof -- especially in the Criminal Justice System.]
