2. Searchable databases for accommodations & Resources for
Education, employment, & entrepreneurship
Part 2 of our series making reform easy
It's all related -- making accommodations in
*Education
*Employment
*Entrepreneurship
One of the reasons accommodations for "people with disabilities" are so important is that our systems and society are not surprising largely set up for people who fit the mean. So if you don't make accommodations for people -- they are NOT going to be able to fit in very easily. Again, not surprisingly, making accommodations for invisible disabilities or differences can be even harder than putting in a ramp. Schools often have forms for making accommodations for students with disabilities and a pretty small knowledge base on which to draw from to fill in those forms. Further, when one doesn't know how to do things and one is constantly re-inventing the wheel -- it does cost more both for schools and parents. See the Atlantic article below, "The Charade of Special Education." https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2016/01/the-charade-of-special-education-programs/421578/ Ironically, there is an incredible resource for Employment --askjan.org with a wonderful searchable database to look for accommodations by disability. Education is in desperate need of a similar database and they could at least get a lot of ideas from askjan.org . The reality is that some people with disabilties/differences may not find traditional employment a good fit, and may want to consider Entrepreneurial endeavors--- yes, we think we could use a database to assist our entrepreneurs with disabilities/differences. Especially in the mental health area where we have a lot of creativity in the community and not always the business acumen, entrepreneurial supports may be particularly helpful [we are stereo-typing of course as well making a full confession]. |
This old clip from "The Twilight Zone" could be taken a lot of ways in the context of the article or the website as a whole.
What we are trying to get at is that people are alike -- just like in "La La Land" people most everywhere have dreams. And just like in the "Twilight Zone" video people can be cruel -- especially when they/we view some people as lesser versions of ourselves ---AND it absolutely does lead to people being locked up even when we have the tools to prevent it. That is starting to change, AND we are way behind. If one's full humanity is recognized, the society (that's us) will ensure access to intensive community mental health services along with reasonable accommodations and supports in education, employment and entrepreneurship. |
