Alicia Keys & 60 Minutes:
" 'Cause Right Now It Don't Make Sense"
Alicia Keys' inspired song "We Are Here" is relevant on so many levels. From Orchid's perspective, here are a few of those levels:
1. However one identifies, "We are here for all of us" is a pretty profound answer to the existential questions and search for meaning we all face. 2. If "We are here for all of us," then a corollary of that might be that "We are here to make a world that works for all of us" such as an adequate mental health system & a therapeutic system of criminal justice and an entire society (including employment) that can build on strengths & compensate for weaknesses. 3. Finally, most people experience profound existential yearnings & that is no less true for people with "mental illness." See "Existential Needs of People with Psychotic Disorders in Pôrto Alegre, Brazil" -- British Journal of Psychiatry (2005). http://bjp.rcpsych.org/content/186/2/141.short |
Orchid's Take: The 60 Minutes video above is an example -- and there are many such examples in Colorado -- of a grossly negligent parens patriae (the state's authority to act on behalf of minors or people who are "incapacitated") when it comes to mental health.
While we are not all on the same page with respect to the remedy -- we have every incentive to come together & fix this. |
